Tips For Removing Water After Basement Flooding

Posted on: 22 September 2021

Did you have an incident that caused water to flood your basement? One of the first things you need to do is get the water out. Even if you only have one or two inches of water in a basement, that can be hundreds or thousands of gallons of water that needs to be removed very fast. Here are some tips that will help with removing the water from a basement.

Don't Use A Wet Vacuum

Have a wet vacuum that you think can get the job done? You'll be surprised at how ineffective a wet vacuum can be. This is because a wet vacuum can only hold so much water, and then the vacuum container needs to be taken outside to be dumped. This is not only a lot of manual labor to do this, but it's a slow and time-consuming process. Your goal should be to remove the water as fast as possible, and a wet vacuum won't let you do that.

Use A Submersible Pump

Submersible pumps are going to get the job done very quickly, and you can use more than one as well if you have a lot of water. You place the submersible pump at a low spot in your basement, and then connect a hose to the pump that will be run far away from your home. Turn the pump on, and it starts ejecting the water to the outside with minimal effort. The key is to make sure that water is far away since if water got into your basement in some way, putting the water near the foundation can just cause it to come back in.

Know That The Hose Matters

When it comes to what kind of hose you place on your submersible pump, know that it matters when it comes to how effective the pump works. Ideally, you want to use a hose that is wide and short since the pump is capable of pushing a lot of water through the hose. Your typical garden hose may only be ⅝" in diameter. Definitely use a larger hose if you can do so. Even moving from ⅝" to ¾" can make a big difference in terms of the speed that the pump works. This can be an alternative to using two pumps, since the size of the hose matters.
